The ‘Bert Cohen Memorial Board’

A couple of months ago I learned, with great sadness, of the death of my dear friend Bertram Cohen. Bert, as some of you will know, was a great philanthropist and one of the greatest supporters of marbles, in all forms, that we will ever see. As a collector and dealer he was responsible for the success of a number of modern glass artists, having bought up their first collections, thus enabling them to finance the production of further work, and then promoted their work to his many followers. Bert and his wife Rosalie travelled extensively promoting marbles and we offer Rosalie our deep condolences on her loss. Bert was one of a kind, eager to share his enthusiasm with everyone, and their home in Boston, where Julia and I stayed on a couple of occasions, was an Aladdin's cave of marbles and related memorabilia. Bert was also a great supporter of our tournament, visiting several times, the last back in 1992 - the trophy played for by the ladies here was presented by him many years ago in memory of his first wife Nina. So, in honour of Bert and his immeasurable contribution to the promotion and love of marbles worldwide, Julia and I presented a new board recording all our individual champions, bearing his name, to be kept here, at The Greyhound, a place he loved to visit. We will never forget him.
