Report 2012

The day started early and with quite a hard frost, as we got towards 10am it began to warm up a bit and when the first game took place it was pleasingly warm. Before the first game between the Handcross Rebels and the PIMPS took place the Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Carol Eade, made a presentation to the Rebels captain, Barry Ray, who had first played in the championship 60 years ago in 1952.

Councillor Bob Lanzer, Leader of Crawley Borough Council accompanied the Mayor and during their visit they talked to many of the 16 teams taking part and also many of the spectators.

In the week running up to the Championship the weather forecast was all doom and gloom: cold, wet and overcast were just some of the predictions for Good Friday. This, I think, was one of the reasons for the low turn out of teams, having said that it was one of the best tournaments ever. All the championship games this year were played on the main ring as well as the final of the Golden Oldies, the Nina Cohen Trophy match, both team semi-finals, the Individual final and Team final

The Golden Oldies had 21 contestants and I would like to take this opportunity to thank David and Mike of the 49ers for both organising and refereeing the Golden Oldies. I would also like to thank all the players from other teams who refereed matches on the day and of course to Mol, the main tournament referee who spent most of the time looking after the main ring

The Mayor Councillor Carol Eade presents Barry Ray with
a memento of his 60th year playing at Tinsley Green

16 teams took part in this years Championship at Tinsley Green, inclueding 3 German teams Thueringer National team, Glickers and 1st MC Erzgebirge.
